Fontes highlighted the ongoing impact of Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric, particularly his repeated insults toward John McCain and Nikki Haley voters. Trump’s latest gaffe during a Fox and Friends interview, where he downplayed Haley’s influence and boasted about his primary victories, could be alienating these key groups further. Fontes pointed out that many moderate Republican voters are increasingly turning away from Trump, with prominent Mormons, including Mesa Mayor John Giles and former Senator Jeff Flake, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
Beyond the divide within the GOP, Fontes also emphasized the significance of Proposition 139, a measure to enshrine abortion rights in Arizona’s constitution. With nearly 900,000 signatures gathered to place it on the ballot, Fontes described the proposition as “wildly popular” and a critical driver of voter turnout in the state.
“The numbers we saw were off the charts,” Fontes remarked, noting the overwhelming public support for reproductive rights in Arizona. He also underscored the state’s long-standing independent streak, with Arizona voters increasingly favoring policies that align with their values, even when they conflict with traditional party lines.
Fontes went on to discuss the growing importance of early voting and the Democratic Party’s advanced ground game, which he attributed to the decision to open field offices months ahead of schedule. He explained that Democrats have made significant inroads with younger voters, many of whom are not captured in traditional polling. These voters, he believes, could be the key to tipping Arizona toward the Harris-Walz ticket in what is expected to be a closely contested race.
With the Arizona electorate poised for significant shifts, Fontes urged all voters to take advantage of early voting and participate in shaping the state’s future. As the 2024 election approaches, the race for Arizona remains one of the most closely watched in the nation.
