If California, or any other state decided to become a Canadian province, I would move there immediately. In fact, if all the blue states joined Canada, and all the "libs" moved there, we could sit back and watch as the people in red states fall into a state of poverty "like no one's ever seen before."

I too would gladly move to any state Canda wants to take.

Why not get out the vote in your local elections to improve the educational opportunities for your immediate neighbors from the earliest K-3 to eldest citizens @ your local Senior center, library, hospital waiting room.

Please, Canada, do not follow in the footsteps of the United States! Keep your healthcare and other SOCIALISTIC policies! Americans are becoming poorer and unhealthier everyday because of our lack of universal healthcare, pre-k childcare and very important policies to protect the working poor.

Many are also less intelligent. History, civics , grammar , vocabulary, reading comprehension & writing are not being taught at optimum levels and this is the fault of both extremes. The removal of the Department of Education would exacerbate this, especially for those with learning disabilities. Additionally, some Southern states want to end the separation of church & state. Critical thinking is waning & that is part of the reason we are in this mess.

I wasn’t aware education had gone down so badly. I don’t have kids. Public schools had all that when I was young - and teachers didn’t buy the supplies for their classrooms.,

Please remember that many of us are fighting for the very same things you are fighting for, but we live in gerrymandered states that keep Democrats from winning elections. Even when we do, they change the rules, strip powers from our Democratic representatives, and misuse Republicans State Supreme Courts to put their thumb on the scale even of our elections. Much like the SCOTUS.

Our teachers are not paid well or supported in the class room. Yes we hear this often, the teachers end up buying supplies for their kids & also deal with the children who are struggling with reading learning issues, which can be exasperated by kids coming to school hungry. Many things to improve there.

Although the last 8 years have seen some erosion (because the US exports many bad things to other nations), Canadians are still better educated, about both facts and civic responsibility.

Back in 2016 when one candidate started claiming he'd build a wall along the southern border (we're still waiting...) I said he was choosing the wrong border. The people from the south mostly were willing to take the crappy jobs American citizens didn't want, while the people from the north were taking the really good jobs. Americans couldn't compete! Remember that at the time Samantha Bee looked like she'd take over from John Stewart. There were other examples then and there have been more since. How often do you look up some celebrity or other famous person and find out they're from Canada? Often, for me. US tech companies say that their best recruits are from U of Waterloo. And so on.

The D[ictator] O[n] D[ay] [O]ne, though not known for intelligence, is correct that the US would have at least a small hope of remaining competitive on the world stage in innovation and creativity if it could just kidnap Canada. Without those - dare I say [forced] immigrants - we are rapidly becoming a Third World country.

Jagmeet Singh is right, and the NDP gets it. Unfortunately, we never manage to elect the NDP federally. Provincially yes, but federally no. I'm no great fan of the Liberals, but above all we need to ensure Poilievre and his "maple Maga" minions do not get elected.

Never PP!!! Trump of the North will sell our country to the highest bidder. I've always voted NDP but maybe a new liberal leader will be our saving grace.

Expand full comment

Indeed, we Canadians need to be strategic this upcoming election - make sure our votes aren’t watered down by splitting them between the NDP and Liberal parties. It will be a regretful mistake if we end up with PP as Prime Minister-he’ll sell Canada out in a heartbeat I’ve no doubt😔

I’m kind of fantasizing right now that Elizabeth May will go all pragmatic and throw her hat into the ring for Liberal leader! 😃 Did you hear her torch Trump in her speech the other day? Outstanding. I think she could make mincemeat out of PP.

You are right. The likelihood of a majority NDP government is pretty much non existent.

Our First Past The Post electoral system was never the best and is no longer necessary. With more than two strong parties being "left of center" it then gives opportunity for the "right" to have more influence.

We have the ability to implement ranked choice ballots. However it is obviously not in the best interest of the incumbents who were elected on the current system to then subsequently change that system.

The gentleman who was on Peterson’s podcast sounds just like our Republicans!!! They want to do the same thing here!! I hope that doesn’t happen. I can’t understand what’s wrong with these people!! My mom worked for the city of NY and has a pension. My dad worked in the fur trade in NY and had a pension. I worked in NY and Florida. For both states. Thank goodness I have a pension from a university in Florida!!!It’s the people with private businesses that don’t understand the systems that are set up for people like me!! In Florida Rick Scott took away the pension plans that were set up for employees where I worked in a university!! I was fortunate in that I was one of the last people to receive a pension!!! (new employees will not have pensions). Meanwhile Scott was in the healthcare industry and made millions like that CEO who was killed. Needless to say, many of us here in Florida do not approve of him. To me, he is a criminal like Trump. The Republicans seem to want people like this. They want to destroy what worked for years!! Just because they own private businesses!! If they have employees they don’t want to have pay them a higher minimum wage. I don’t understand it. These owners seem to be so greedy!!!!

The gentleman on Peterson's podcast is no gentleman. He is a mini-me Trump-wannabe, and he wants to be our Prime Minister. (I'm Canadian, in case you can't tell.) And if we don't get our act together quickly, he will be. I hope there is time for Canadians to be made clearly aware of the dangers posed by a Conservative government under Pierre Poilievre, and to rally enough votes against them that they do not get elected. And although I'm not a Liberal Party supporter, I also hope that the NDP (my party of choice) doesn't pull a non-confidence vote on the current government, because that would result in a snap election which will almost certainly guarantee that the Cons get elected, and then we are royally screwed.

Maybe the two go hand-in-hand, my only doubt or concern about this philosophy is that Mr. T is not just a bully. He is a malignant narcissist who will suffer nothing because his main goal is to raid the US Treasury. All of these other tactics are merely smoke screens and attempts to distract from the theft. Everything for him is a transactional game or a cruel act.

One thing I never see mentioned is that Trump seems to behaving like the "Putin" of the western world. It has been quite obvious over the years that trump is infatuated by Putin, so now I believe he is really trying to behave like him. Any thoughts?

Expand full comment

You mean like this? https://dissonantdissident.substack.com/p/relieved-of-command

I've been following the war in Ukraine, as well as politics in the US. Juxtaposing, I note that DJT greatly admires Putin, and other tyrants around the world. Putin is destroying his own country, killing hundreds of thousands of Russians in his efforts to enslave millions of Ukrainians. However, his conventional military is so weak and incompetent that it poses no credible threat to the US or Europe. Putin is a horrible person, but he is of sound mind, which means he can't actually use the nukes he has. He knows it's suicide to launch them, and so do his lieutenants and associates, who would surely intervene to save their own skins.

But what if Putin had the most formidable conventional military force in the world? A force he could deploy without guaranteeing his own immediate demise. What if he had the US military? Of course Putin is busy elsewhere, but what if some other aspiring despot gained command of our military, without any constraints from Congress, or the judicial system? What if he was willing to use the military against American citizens on US soil? And what if that despot was a megalomaniac whose mind was failing? Kinda scary doncha think? And not just for the United States, but for the whole world.

It is clear to me that DJT wants absolute power to rule the US just as Putin and other tyrants rule their nations. He wants an oligarchy of billionaires and a cabinet of corrupt loyalists, with him at the helm. He wants a weaponized justice department to implement a police state, to arrest and imprison any who oppose him. He wants a military that will extend his power over the whole world. This is a calamity that cannot be allowed to occur. I'm a veteran, I took an oath to protect our republic, and the Constitution that defines it, from enemies both foreign and domestic. I keep my promises.

DJT can never be allowed to command the US military. The moment he is inaugurated as Commander in Chief, he should be relieved of command by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and immediately court martialed for treason. The office of President shall then be filled according to the chain of succession as defined in the Constitution, but with the caveat that no one in that chain shall be declared the President unless they have passed a thorough FBI background check and received top secret clearance.

This would not be a military coup, nor an insurrection. No violence is required or incited, and civilian leadership would be maintained at all times. But whatever MAGAt ended up in the oval office would know that there is indeed a line in the sand, not to be crossed. The Joint Chiefs of Staff would retain the power to relieve any acting President who violates the Constitution, as that is prima facie treason. Establish that precedent once, and the nation can weather the MAGAt storm until those shitheads are voted out.

As for the root problem, I have no idea how to increase the IQ of 74 million morons. Alternatively, perhaps we can offer them all a free luxury cruise, on the Golgafrinchan Ark Fleet Ship B. Just remember to disinfect your phone.

YES, they ARE going to install the person that the majority of Voting Americans said they want to be President! YES, that's what it means to be a Democracy. But don't worry. The amount of pain most US citizens are going to feel within months should be enough to remind 80% of them that voting isn't something that other people do and that not voting for the one person that can actually win has consequences. We can flip both houses of Congress in less than 2 years if people want to. If not it'll 4 years of pain before the next chance to make things a little better.
