Let me get straight to the point: Chuck Schumer caved. Plain and simple. And I don’t care how he tries to spin it with flowery speeches and procedural nonsense — we see through it.
As Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez laid out clearly, a vote for cloture is a vote for the bill. It’s a vote to even allow a vote on this disastrous continuing resolution (CR) cooked up by Donald Trump and his MAGA wrecking crew. You don’t get credit for voting “no” later after you already opened the damn door.
Let me explain this so no one gets gaslit here — cloture is the step that requires 60 votes in the Senate to proceed. That’s the Democrats’ leverage point. That’s where they could block this whole MAGA agenda from even getting a vote. But Schumer said he’s voting for cloture. That’s capitulation. That’s surrender. That’s weak.
And guess what? The American people aren’t dumb. We know exactly what this CR does — it guts Medicaid, kneecaps the Department of Education, hands the federal government over to Trump and Elon Musk as their personal slush fund, and completely undermines congressional oversight. It’s an assault on our democracy masquerading as a funding bill.
This is not just about political gamesmanship. This is about survival — of our institutions, of basic human dignity, of the programs that working Americans rely on. And we need Democratic senators who are willing to fight, not fold.
So let me be crystal clear: I stand with the Democratic House members who voted against this monstrosity. And I stand with any senator — Democrat or not — who votes no on cloture. Because anything else is complicity.
Even Rand Paul — Rand Paul! — is voting against this CR. Think about that for a second.
If there’s a government shutdown, call it what it is: a Trump Shutdown. Just like we have a Trump Recession in the works right now. Let the American people see that you are fighting for them, not enabling the billionaire class to crush what’s left of our social safety net.
Just because a party is in the minority, that does not mean they must cave to all the demands of the majority. Democrats must force the Republicans’ hand. Make the case to the American people. Ensure they come to the negotiating table to get rid of these reckless cuts to programs Americans need.
I understand concerns about a government shutdown. Believe me. But we need to realize that our government is being looted, pillaged, and shut down from within as we speak! Why should Democrats sign off on a CR that will give Trump and Musk a rubber stamp to go even further?
And you want to know how angry people are? Democratic House members are reportedly urging AOC to primary Schumer. Even the more centrist members. Yes, really. One of them even said they’d write a check now. That’s how furious folks are about this betrayal.
This is a moment for courage. For backbone. For clarity. But instead of rising to meet it, Chuck Schumer chose to fall in line. Perhaps most frustrating is that he reversed course just one day after bragging that Republicans don’t have the votes. We don’t need stunts. We don’t need empty words. We need action.
We’re watching. And we will remember. Because we’re not going to sit back and let a bunch of authoritarian billionaires hijack our government while Senate Democrats hand them the keys.
We need leaders who will fight back. Not people who deliver speeches one day about how bad the GOP bill is — then vote to help it move forward the next. That’s not leadership. That’s cowardice.
So to every senator reading this: vote no on cloture. Vote no on the bill. And to the Meidas Mighty — keep speaking out. We hear your calls to senators are working. You can continue to make your voice heard by calling the U.S. Senate at (202) 224-3121.
Stay loud. And let’s continue to hold politicians to account—regardless of what side of the aisle they may be on.
