Democrats are deploying a bold new strategy to hold Donald Trump accountable for his long history of empty promises and blatant lies. By crafting legislation that mirrors Trump’s campaign commitments—such as capping credit card interest rates, supporting unions, and prioritizing American workers—they’re forcing the former president to either back his own words or expose himself as the fraud he is.
MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas recently highlighted this approach, describing it as a mix of reverse psychology and legislative traps. “Trump’s campaign was a masterclass in deceit,” Meiselas said. “Now, Democrats are calling his bluff, taking his promises and saying, ‘Here, sign this.’”
This new strategy shift mirrors a plan we suggested recently on the MeidasTouch Podcast; that Democrats must stop being reactive and should instead go on the offense, putting Trump and the GOP in the defensive position of having to explain why they are against policies that most Americans support.
One example of this strategy comes from Senator Bernie Sanders, who is introducing a bill to cap credit card interest rates at 10%. The proposal directly reflects a promise Trump made during his campaign. “Great idea,” Sanders said. “Let’s see if Trump supports it.” Sanders has also been vocal about health care reform, seizing on the momentum of RFK Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” slogan to outline a comprehensive plan addressing the country’s broken health care system.
But this is about more than specific policy proposals—it’s about exposing the hypocrisy and lies that define Trump’s political brand. While Trump claimed to be pro-union, his administration actively worked to dismantle the National Labor Relations Board, undermining workers’ rights to organize and file grievances. His flip-flopping on H-1B visas is another example, with Trump pivoting from promises to protect American jobs to making excuses for billionaires like Elon Musk, who resist paying fair wages to American workers.
Democrats are using this strategy not just to highlight Trump’s failures but also to reclaim the narrative on key issues like health care, labor rights, and economic fairness. “Democrats need to own these issues,” Meiselas said. “Stop letting MAGA hijack them, only to use them as tools to deceive voters. Introduce the legislation, message it relentlessly, and take it directly to the communities.” Republicans can block these popular proposals at their own peril.
This approach also serves as a foundation for future elections, including the 2026 midterms. By repeatedly exposing Trump’s refusal to support legislation that aligns with his campaign rhetoric, Democrats aim to show voters the true nature of his empty populism. Trump is for the billionaires. Not for you. Prove it over and over.
Sanders has been particularly vocal about health care, framing it as a moral imperative for a country as wealthy as the United States. In a recent op-ed, he laid out a vision for universal health care, lower prescription drug costs, and a focus on improving quality of life for all Americans. “If MAGA wants to call this ‘woke,’ let them,” Meiselas said. “This isn’t woke—it’s what Americans want.”
Democrats are also pushing for policies like paid family and medical leave, raising the minimum wage, and combating corporate greed in the food industry. These proposals are designed to address issues that resonate deeply with Americans while exposing the stark contrast between Trump’s rhetoric and his actual policies.
Meiselas emphasized the importance of Democrats staying on the offensive. “Don’t overthink it. Call their bluff. Expose the lies. When they block these bills, make it crystal clear to the American people who’s really standing in the way of progress.”
As Democrats continue to roll out this strategy, they’re not just holding Trump accountable—they’re showing voters what real leadership looks like. By turning Trump’s broken promises into legislative action, they’re making it clear that his populist facade is nothing more than a con job designed to exploit his base. Trump may have fooled many voters in the past, but Democrats are determined to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
