Randi Weingarten on Trump’s War on Education Backfiring

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten breaks down how Trump’s plan to abolish the Department of Education is an attack on America’s future.

Donald Trump’s war on education is in full swing, and young voters are making their voices heard—almost 70% disapprove of Trump, according to new polling. Maybe that’s because he’s actively working to steal their futures—gutting funding, killing opportunities, and now trying to abolish the Department of Education entirely.

I spoke with Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and she made it clear: This isn’t just about budget cuts. It’s about deliberate destruction—ripping apart the very programs that help working-class families, students with disabilities, rural communities, and first-generation college students.

Trump isn’t even hiding it. Here he is, from the Oval Office, saying his Education Secretary should “put herself out of a job.” His administration is actively working to eliminate the Department of Education, a move that would strip billions in funding from public schools, kill school lunch programs, and make college even more inaccessible for low-income students.

And let’s be real: Trump has no clue what the Department of Education even does. As Weingarten pointed out, states already run schools—the federal government’s role is to fill the gaps and ensure kids aren’t left behind. Programs like:
✅ Title I – Funding for low-income schools
✅ IDEA – Support for students with disabilities
✅ Career & Tech Ed – Pathways to trade and vocational jobs
✅ Pell Grants & Student Aid – Assistance for first-generation college students

This isn’t about “small government.” It’s about making life harder for working-class Americans. And Trump’s allies are proudly admitting it. MAGA Senator John Kennedy literally told Americans, “Get used to it.” They want to take away your kid’s education, your public school funding, your protections—and they don’t care.

In Kentucky, a Trump voter—an educator—was shocked to learn that cutting federal education funding meant her job was on the line.

“I didn’t vote for that.”

But here’s the reality: Every single one of the 15 states that most rely on federal school funding voted for Trump. Red states depend on these programs the most, and yet Trump’s policies are designed to punish his own voters.

It’s not just Trump. Elon Musk is deep in this scheme, too—wielding his unchecked power to cut government programs while handing private data to his handpicked cronies at Doge. Weingarten’s team had to file a lawsuit to stop Musk’s Doge operation from illegally accessing students’ financial aid, Social Security numbers, and tax information.

If Trump gets his way, the Department of Education won’t just be abolished—it will be privatized. That means less accountability, more corporate greed, and students treated like commodities instead of future leaders.

Weingarten’s message was clear: We’re fighting this in the courts, in Congress, and in the streets. Lawsuits are being filed. School boards are being pressured. Voters are waking up.

This isn’t just about stopping Trump. It’s about proving that education is a right, not a privilege for the wealthy.

The fight is now. Call your school board. Show up to meetings. Demand answers. Ask how much funding your school stands to lose. Because when MAGA politicians cut education, it’s your kids, your community, and your future on the line.
